ON THE NEW TERROR WARNING
What are these people thinking, the ones who are saying Ashcroft is blowing things out of proportion by issuing a new terror alert? I assume these complaints are coming from the same people who would complain after an attack that DC didn't share every shred of intelligence with the American people and anyone else who can get CNN? (CNN.com, by the way, grabbed the No. 1 spot for news web sites in September - due in part to its huge surge in international traffic, according to the latest tracking numbers.)
One more very local thought on this Double-Code Red warning, or whatever they're calling it. About two hours after this warning was issued last night, I needed to return a video to a store just a short way past our local police station. The cop shop is in the middle of the block, with its own driveway that extends through its lot from West 10th to Charles Street. As a result, Charles and West 10th have been closed to traffic since the attacks, and on some days, even pedestrian traffic is forbidden. (For a few weeks, the barricades were staffed by a bunch of nice cops from Florida who came up to help.) But last night, the barricades were in the street, but no cops were there. The street was open to pedestrian traffic, despite the Ashcroft advisory. And at the front door of the station itself, there was a barricade, but the ever-present police officer was gone. Walked right by, twice, wondering if the NYPD knew a whole lot more about the advisory than I did.
