Making News Smarter
I spent an absurd amount of time last night writing a post about how media isn't getting a whole let better lately. I whined about the dumbing down of CNN, the further celebrification of TV "reporters" and the (sometimes limited) potential new news sources such as Narco News, Indy Media and Human Rights Watch. But you know, the thing is, sometimes you can write and write and have a lot of tangents and still not have a conclusion, let alone an entirely coherent thought. I'll let you know when I do.
However, I would like to recommend War Photographer, a documentary I saw last night. It's about James Nachtwey, who has documented some of the worst atrocities of our time. Near the end of the film, he says that editors and advertisers are now less inclined to put tragedy in their pages, especially if there's something like a Rolex ad on the next page. But he says he believes the editors are wrong - that readers really do want to know about the injustices in the world.
