Happy as Richard
If you can’t get enough war commentary, try these:
WeLovetheIraqiInformationMinister.com
Elsewhere ... a reporter on NPR yesterday morning had an item about the Baghdad media minders not showing up for work. Apparently the guy who did show up was one guy who was a particular jerk – and he showed up only to try to steal a Mitsubishi that belonged to an Italian news crew. Apparently he got caught, and then asked if anyone would give him a ride home.
This morning’s NPR said the Marines that rolled into town yesterday actually got to take advantage of the media minders absence at the Palestine Hotel. The minders’ rooms were empty, so the Marines got to sleep in their beds and use their showers – apparently their first in 30 days. (Couldn’t find a link to the stories, sorry.)
The latest installment of Get Your War On, features reaction to yesterday’s war news, including this line:
So what do you suppose Dick Cheney is thinking right now? ‘Thank God, my decades-long dream of liberating the Iraqi children has been realized! Now, to cure AIDS!’
The Onion had a great news brief on Cheney as well:
Government No Longer Even Bothering To Hide Halliburton Favors
WASHINGTON, DC—With last week's announcement that it will award Halliburton a lucrative contract to put out Iraqi oil-well fires after the war, the U.S. government has officially stopped trying to hide its favoritism toward the Houston-based company. "When we first started cutting Halliburton sweetheart deals, we'd worry about how it would look, with Dick Cheney being their former CEO and all," White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said. "Somewhere along the line, though, we just kind of said, 'Ah, fuck it.'" Fleischer added that Halliburton has something "real juicy" coming its way when the U.S. invades Iran in July 2004.
Oh heck, and while I’m at it, here’s my secret recipe for Dick Cheney dip. It’s not really appropriate with bathing suit season coming up, but there’s still snow on the sidewalks here.
DICK CHENEY DIP*
16 oz. cream cheese
1 cup Parmesan cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
1/4 cup milk or heavy cream
5 cups of cleaned spinach leaves
14 ounces artichoke hearts
5 cloves of garlic
½ tbs. black pepper
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Warm milk in a saucepan on low heat then add cream cheese and stir frequently, blending in the cheese as it melts. Add the garlic. Before the cream cheese is totally melted, add the mozzarella, then the Parmesan cheese and mayonnaise, stirring very frequently.
Remove from heat and add spinach. Use a hand blender here to shred spinach into the cheese mix – it turns it all green. Add artichoke heart pieces (strain off any oil they might be packed in) and use the hand blender lightly, to just barely break up the artichoke hearts.
Bake 50 minutes covered. Remove from oven and cover with a layer of mozzarella cheese and return to oven uncovered for final 10 minutes.
