Forgotten New York
Forgotten New York
The husband and I (and 48 other people) spent a good part of Sunday pedding around lower Manhattan on tour with Kevin Walsh, the intrepid Webmaster of Forgotten New York.
Kevin's a great guy with a head full of knowledge and opinions about this grand city. Check out the pictures I posted from the tour, and watch Kevin's page for a follow up.
Here are the bits I jotted in my notebook from the tour:
The New York Unearthed museum, devoted to the city's archaeology, had 500,000 artifacts dug up from Five Points. Unfortunately all but 18 were stored at the World Trade Center and were destroyed Sept. 11.
Mike Epstein, a guy on the tour, recounted his episode with an MTA worker smoking on a subway platform. Mike took a picture (as some photobloggers are in the habit of doing at least until the MTA tries to outlaw picture taking,) and the worker responded with a wee bit of annoyance. Mike said the employee eventually threw Mike to the ground and pinned him there until police arrived. The police said Mike committed no crime and he was released. Though Mike said he now has a lawsuit pending.
There is a headstone in the Trinity Church cemetery with cryptic characters up top. You can learn how to decode the tombstone by checking out the recently reissued "Meyer Berger's New York."
